Program Manager, Global Business Operations Excellence

Job Summary


Kennametal is seeking a highly motivated Program Manager of Global Business Operations Excellence to join our team. The role of Program Manager, Global Business Operations Excellence is expected to drive change through project and program leadership of high-priority business projects. You will deliver simplification and effectiveness to the business through execution of business-critical projects and strategic programs and initiatives. You will interact with and influence team members at all levels of the organization.


The Program Manager, Global Business Operations Excellence will lead continuous improvement activities including workshops and kaizen events. You will collaborate with team members throughout the organization to drive simplification and continuous improvement.  The work will be highly cross-functional, requiring collaboration with Commercial and Business Unit Leaders and their teams. This position requires strong collaboration, communication, leadership, and change management skills as well as experience driving business improvement projects.


Key Job Responsibilities


  • Collaborate with business teams to proactively identify, prioritize, facilitate, and lead business projects and strategic initiatives.

  • Manage day-to-day responsibilities of multiple projects and project teams.

  • Define project charters specifying objectives and success criteria, detailed project plans, and budgets.

  • Conduct proactive and comprehensive risk management to ensure risks are identified, impacts are known and communicated, and mitigations are planned into the project schedule.

  • Present complex topics in an easy-to-understand manner.

  • Facilitate workshops with team members from all levels of the business to drive action and results.

  • Develop and lead a management operating system to effectively drive operational excellence and project management rigor. Collaborate with operational excellence and project office resources throughout the organization.

  • Lead multiple complex projects simultaneously from definition to closure and control.  Manage issues, risks and budgets.

  • Deliver projects on-time and within budget to achieve specified goals and objectives.

  • Facilitate issue resolution and escalation across the project teams, steering committees, and business stakeholders

  • Analyzes problems for root cause and recommend improvement solutions.

  • Collaborate with Project Managers in other areas to create a community of practice, leverage standardization and drive positive development within the function.


Education & Work Experience


  • 3-5 years' experience in discipline of operational excellence and project management.

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in Engineering, Sciences, Business or a related field. Advanced degree (MS/MBA) and additional certifications a plus.

  • Demonstrated project management skills and hands-on working knowledge of the project management life cycle, PMP Certification and/or other project management training is preferred. Strong knowledge and practical application of program management processes, methodology, and architecture.

  • Application knowledge of business improvement / Lean Six Sigma methodology. Experience with facilitation of Kaizen events. Lean Green belt or Black belt preferred.

  • Ability to redefine process to increase effectiveness and use statistics to make data driven decisions.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead project teams.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, leadership qualities, influencing, communicating, and consulting skills, team/interpersonal skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Experience managing projects through the complete project lifecycle: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring, Closing.

  • Experience working with and influencing global teams.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Project Management Software (e.g. MS Project), and demonstrated ability to learn other business software. Preferred project management software is CA Technologies PPM.




  • Geographical Scope:  Global, interacting with Global & Regional commercial Leaders, Business Unit

  • Travel Required:  Global 20% - 50%
